I rag on the Scott Pilgrim series a lot (at least, in my mind…) for being overworshipped. I think it’s time to come clean that I am kinda just jealous. The plot is simple, but the concept is novel. Every book is really very funny and an easy breezy readsy. There are a bunch of characters, but through their interactions, facial expressions, and overall design, they are all well developed and play an important part in Scott’s journey. I care about them and dammit, how did O’Malley get me to want Knives Chau to end up happy?! And the art is fantastic; I love O’Malley’s Canadian-yet-manga-ish style. It’s carefree and silly, but expressive and somehow, real.
I started reading the series after the movie was announced, so I think a lot of my negativity comes from the inevitable feeling of a soiled work. I just really don’t think the characters will translate, and the story won’t be satisfying when played out in live action. But I just pre-ordered Finest Hour, and am a little sad that it’s all about to end. Above are some frames from the 5th book, Scott Pilgrim vs. The Universe… I think it concisely demonstrates why Michael Cera… or any three dimensional human, perhaps… will fail to do the series justice.
